It seems like it was either the movie or the book were censored, but only in America/Canada, because of the religious aspects!.

As quoted from the sourced website:

'This simple story sets off salvation!. When she hears it, Lyra “felt something strange happen to her body!. She felt a stirring at the roots of her hair: she found herself breathing faster!.” (At least that’s what she felt in the British edition; the American version leaves these lines out!.)'Www@QuestionHome@Com

They were controversial because they promoted atheism by having the characters war against the book's version of the Catholic Church, thus effectively promoting an anti-religious sentiment!. There was no censorship at all--the Northern Lights version is simply the British version, aka British spellings and words!. (Love this series, by the way!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I could be mistaken, but I believe the censorship controversy had to do with the film adaptation!. The novels are pretty blatantly anti-religion and the film opted to virtually omit this!. To my knowledge there is no censorship of the publications of the novels!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i didn't know there were alt versions!?!?!?wish i'd known that back when i was reading them all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
