Question: So I decided to participate in NaNoWriMo!.!.!.!.!?
Okay, since I am not working right now, it's the perfect time for me to try to do this!. I have come up with an idea that I think I could easily write about!. However, even though I think I can really get the idea down I'm not sure it's the type of book I would like to read!. Does that make any sense!?!?!? Do writers normally write a genre different than they read!? I usually like to read very dramatic books but my idea is a kind of mystery/romance!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

In normal circumstances I'd say the advice you've been given in other responses - write in the genre you like - applies!. However, NaNoWriMo is not normal circumstances!

The novel you produce for nanowrimo is not supposed to be a literary masterpiece, your personal opus, or even something that's any good!. It's more an exercise in turning, "I'd like to write a novel one day," into, "I'm gonna write a novel RIGHT NOW!" It's supposed to clear out the conduits of your creative juices and empower you with the knowledge that you CAN write a book if you put your mind to it!.

Sure, there are a surprising number of very talented people who have turned their nano books into real-life publishing successes, but if you talk with most participants or read their novel synopses, you'll see that they're doing exactly what you are: choosing a genre and plot that they feel they can generate 50,000 words for in one short month!. If you check out the support fora at the site, you'll also see that everyone acknowledges the writing will necessarily be utter rubbish, so why not have fun with a corny romance or a schlock horror while you're at it!?

You never know, you might surprise yourself with a talent for writing in a genre you'd never considered!. And when nano is over you can always start on the book you'd really like to write, and take a bit more time over it!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hey there!. I'm also doing NaNoWriMo this year!. A lot of my friends from grad school do it as we all got our degrees in writing popular fiction!. It's great to get you're mind going creatively!.

It does help to write in one of the genres you read because you already know the basic rules and guidelines of those genres!. Like I tend to write suspense, thrillers or horror because that's what I read!. I know what kind of style is most represented by the genre and what type of dialogue is normally used!. You can of course give it a try to go outside your normal genre of choice as long as you feel you know the genre well enough to write in it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Rule Number One is always "Write What You Know"!. If you don't read much mystery/romance, you might want to try something else for the first effort!. also, contrary to what another person said here, reading a lot is extremely valuable to a writer!. Most great writers have been avid readers!. My favorite author is William Faulkner, and he gave this advice to aspiring writers: “Read, read, read!. Read everything - trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it!. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master!. Read! You'll absorb it!. Then write!. If it is good, you'll find out!. If it's not, throw it out the window!.” Www@QuestionHome@Com

Normally you must be able to read the genre you are going to write as it's a form of research!.

IMO, if you don't enjoy to read the kind of book you are writing, it's going to be missing something!. If you enjoy the genre, then you'll know what about the story that readers enjoy most!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best writers are the ones who read the least and live the most!.

So as a second best, yah, I'd say it's better to write outside of a genre that you read!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
