Question: I need help translating Shakespeare!?
I'm trying to memorize a passage from The Merchant Of Venice but it's so hard not only to read, but to recite! So i tried translating into modern english, but I stink! Could anyone translate for me!?

Make room,and let him stand before our face!.
Shylock, the world thinks, and i think so too
that thou but lead'st this fashion of thy malice
to the last hour of act; and 'tis thought
thou'lt shw thy mercy and remorse more strange

Than is thy strange apparent cruelty;
and where thou new exact'st the penalty,
which is a pound of this poor merchant's flesh,Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree--the No Fear Shakespeare at Sparknotes is your best bet!. It's really smart to want to know just what it is you're saying, rather than memorizing a bunch of words you don't really understand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Suggest you follow links found in gray at this site under 'Shakespeare Study Guides!.' A few directions to your goal are these:

Follow 'Read Shakespeare's Plays' first, on the home page in gray under that study guide heading, then see 'Navigate' on the right, under which you'll find 'Shakespeare Translated' which is a link!. Hit it!.

After you follow that, you'll see 'The Merchant of Venice' which you also follow (it's a link) to the act and scene where this speech is located!.

You will see side-by-side text of both the original text and a translation!.

I searched several acts and scenes for this speech to give you an exact location but tired of futile efforts fairly quickly!. Am not familiar enough with the play to know where this section is!. You are, I'm sure!.

This site is safe (I've been a member there for over a year) and clear!.
It will give you the best translation possible, plus good sourcing for it!.
I highly recommend you follow the directions above!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
