*please excuse the terrible length of this (sorry) and read it anyway*
First, though in the past a few poems of mine were published, I am not a poet!. Still I appreciate good writing and poetry can be very good!.
So I subscribe to the "Poets and Writers" magazine; expensive off the shelf, cheap with a subscription!.
That magazine is mainly a 'how-to' helper, complete w/'testimonials' and success stories as well as 'don't-do-this' articles and lists of contests in the back!.
The contests charge a readers' fee, fair to do, and this also assures exposure and a good money prize for a winner!. Winning, even second place or 'only publication,' is a trip!.
Contests are also to be found in The Writer's Market!. In my opinion, all writers of any kind should have a copy of this book, or be a member to read it online http://www!.writersmarket!.com , always current!. The book comes out annually, but can also be studied at a library!. I still study it frequently re: publishing!.
Anthologies are often easier to get a poem into than magazines these days!. Many magazines have tightened their belts in the face of the 'net!.
These anthologies are also in found the magazine and book listed above!.
For poets, one of my favorite sources of exposure (and networking, finding where to publish) are poetry slams!. They are held in nearly every town I've lived in for several years now!. Here they are at the library!.
They are an 'open mic' occasion for poets, and many memorize their pieces and 'perform' them!. I have seen editors and publishers at larger slams I've been to and always see introductions and connections being made!. So I am suggesting you seek out slams as well!. Don't worry about 'performing,' just know you want to read your work effectively if reading!.
You might also want to check out any newspapers in your area that has any kind of literary page, and look for any local lit-type publication, in the yellow pages if necessary!. They do still exist because writers just naturally need outlets and readers just need to read!. There is one here!.
Do your best and you'll find an editor who wants your work!. Be persistent and imaginative in this endeavor!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
