In doing so Steinbeck touches on several themes: dreams, loneliness, how man's prosperity achieves cruelty, powerlessness, and uncertainty of the future — or fate!.[7] Steinbeck emphasizes dreams throughout the book!. George aspires for independence, to be his own boss, to have a homestead, and most importantly to be "somebody"!. Lennie aspires to be with George on his independent homestead, and to quench his fixation on soft objects!. Candy aspires to reassert his responsibility lost with the death of his dog, and for security for his old age — on George's homestead!. Crooks aspires to a small homestead where he can express self-respect, acceptance, and security!. Curley's wife dreams to be an actress, to satisfy her desire for fame lost when she married Curley!. At the ranch, the dream appears to move closer to reality!. Candy, the aged, one-handed ranch-hand, even offers to pitch in with Lennie and George so they can buy the farm by the end of the month!. The dream crashes when Lennie accidentally kills the young and attractive wife of Curley, the ranch owner's son, while trying to stroke her hair!. A lynch mob led by Curley gathers!. George, realizing he is doomed to a life of loneliness and despair like the rest of the migrant workers and wanting to spare Lennie a painful death at the hands of the vengeful and violent Curley, shoots Lennie in the back of the head before the mob can find him after they had recited their dreams of owning their own land!. For Curley's wife, Candy, George and Lenny, they would have no reason to get out of bed in the morning and toil away upon miserable, difficult, soul destroying labour if they had nothing to look forward to!. Therefore, be it possible or not, they each develop a dream for their future simply as a means of escapism, a reason for continuing on, for thinking that their entire lives will not soley revolve around labour and visiting whore houses!. The impossibility means little to them- they probably know in the back of their minds that their dreams are unlikely to happen, but they have to cling to them anyway, or else what more do they have!? Curley's wife pretends that it is her mother's fault that she is not in Hollywood, George believes that the old people who own the ranch he is saving for will still be around by the time he has made the appropriate money!. They fool themselves into believing what is unlikely to happen!. The impossibility lies in the fact that they are all poor and desperate, and America is in a recession!.
