Question: Can someone explain this part of Pride and Prejudice to me!?
I'm a little confused about the thing with Mr!. Darcy and Mr!. Wickham!. Was Mr!. Wickham supposed to inherit a fortune, or something, and Mr!. Darcy somehow prevented it!? also, in Mr!. Darcy's letter to Elizabeth, what does he claim actually happened!? I don't really understand what he was saying!.

This is not a homework question, I'm just trying to understand the book!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Mr!. Wickham was supposed to go into the Church!. He was supposed to be a clergyman and was to inherit the living at Pemberly!. After the senior Mr Darcy's death, Wickham told Mr!. Darcy that he wanted to go into law instead!. Darcy gave him the money, but Wickham gambled it all away within weeks!. He came back to Darcy, demanding he give him more money, but Darcy refused, saying Wickham had already gotten what he was supposed to inherit!. Wickham was upset and went around telling everyone Darcy had deprived him of his inheritance, and Darcy was telling Elizabeth in his letter it was Wickham's own fault!. In another attempt to get the money, Wickham tried to persuade Georgiana, Darcy's sister, to elope with him!.

Edit-
Thumbs down!? For what!? I mean, what I said is right!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Darcys father had provided a stipulation that Wickham would receive money to further his career in the church (not an inheritance more like uh tuition payment lol) Wickham was supposed to go into the Church to be a clergyman !. After the death of darcys father Wickham told Mr!. Darcy Darcy he didn't want to be a clergyman he just wanted the money!. Darcy gave him the money, Wickham gambled and squandered it all away in a short amount of time!. He demanded more money, but Darcy refused, saying Wickham had already gotten what he was supposed to recieve but had squandered it!. Wickham was upset and went around telling everyone Darcy was not honorable had deprived him of his inheritance out of jealousy, which was b!.s and in the letter Darcy tells Elizabeth all of this and that he had lived up tp his fathers stipulations but Wickham wasted his money away and then had the gall to ask for more!. also he tells lizzy that wickham was so desperate he tried to elope with darcys sister Georgiana to gain access to her vast fortuneWww@QuestionHome@Com

No, Mr!. Wickham was supposed to inherit a living as a clergyman and a house, I think, but he decided not to join the clergy, and wanted money instead, which Darcy gave him!. Then he came back wanting more money after he gambled it all away, which Darcy refused, since he had already given him what he wanted from the inheritance!. Wickham went around telling people Darcy refused to give him his rightful inheritance to turn everyone against him and to get pity!. This proves that Elizabeth's hatred toward him for what she thought he did to Wickham was unfounded!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mr!. Wickham had no money and therefore he had to marry it!. He chose Darcy's underage sister and ruined her by trying to elope with her!. It is becasue of pressure brought on by Darcy that Wickham actually marries Elizabeth's sister!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
