He hates his alcoholic mother!. He hates his abusive father!. He hates all of the people in his life who pretend to care about him!. But most of all, Cole hates himself!. He is accustomed to lying, manipulating and getting his way because he knows his rich father will get him out of trouble!. It takes a long journey of finding himself, but in the end Cole sees that the only way to change his life is to change himself!. The story begins right after Cole has had another run in with the law!. Tiny, scrawny Peter "snitches" on Cole, which didn't go over very well!. Cole takes a life's worth of anger out on his classmate, smashing his head into a sidewalk and pummeling him senseless!. When he's finally pulled off, Cole laughs and spits on Peter's broken, cowering body!. Cole is given the opportunity to join Circle Justice, an alternative to prison!. Circle Justice is a way of healing the victim, Cole and the community by sending Cole to an Alaskan island in isolation!. There, he is expected to find himself and realize the consequences of his actions!. With fake enthusiasm, Cole accepts Circle Justice and he is dropped off on the island with the clothes on his back, a small wooden hut and a few boxes of supplies!. For a short while, he is allowed to spend time with Garvey and Edwin, his counselors that he despises at first!. In an act of rage, Cole burns down the shelter and all of the supplies in it!. He thinks to himself how powerful he is!.!.!.nothing can stop him!. Sure enough, a mystical white bear challenges Cole's "authority!." After trying to stand up to a fully grown bear, Cole is mauled nearly to death!. In the grueling description of the vivid attack, you can almost feel Cole's hunger and pain as he lies on the island all alone, forced to survive and stay conscious by eating live worms and a mouse! This book is so well written, you really feel what Cole is feeling!. There are so many life lessons entwined in the storyline, and so many characters you can relate to!. To look back on where Cole started and where he is at the end of the book, it's such a dramatic change!
