Position:Home>Books & Authors> How long should a book be?Question: How long should a book be!? I have written a science fiction novel of about 52,000 words!. This makes it roughly 210 pages!. However, the story is far from finished!. I had planned to do it in several books but I had also considered doing two to three parts per book!. If I put two parts per book, it becomes a 420 page novel!. Is this too long to expect people to read!? Www@QuestionHome@Com
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I just looked at some of my novels and they are about 400 to 427 pages!. I think it would be a really good idea to do a three part series!. If it's a good story I'd sit through 420 pages in a single book (and have)!. If it's not good, I'd feel cheated by page 10, and might not read it!. Turtledove, the Ender's World series, Asimov, the Verkosigan saga, etc!., etc!. There's nothing new about a multi-book novel!. Does it follow one character or a society!? Does it take place over a year or within 24 hours!? The more they try to pin down facts or elaborate on a character's reasons for doing something, the worse it gets!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Yes and no!. A book should be long enough to convey the message, while short enough to hold the reader's attention!. I have read several 400+ page book, and don't think it is outrageous!.
