Carriages date back to when men got smart and started domesticating livestock!. The first carriages (and probably not the ones you’re thinking of) were more like wooden tubs with no back and two wheels!. They were attached to ropes or chains and then harnessed to the horse!. There were like the chariots seen back in ancient Rome!.

Then came the pioneers!. They were smarter!. They covered their carriages to protect the passengers and the cargo as well as added another two wheels!. They even had seats for the driver and passengers!.

The Carriages I think you want were more like the ones that showed up around the 16th century when those Victorian gowns and fancy hair was in style!. People were so occupied with looking nice that caridges were no longer used for just transportation, they were used for show!. By the 17th century (and probably the one you want) had progressed the carriage to being a magnificent work of art with trims, and cushioned seats draws by a team of show horses, even if they didn’t need that many animals to pull it!. This was more the Cinderella-y type of transportation!. By the mid 18th century few people were still using the coaches for travel due to the railway and they became a bit less classy and more practical!. These were more buggies than anything!.

Then around 1920, cars popped up and the age of quadruped drawn transportation was over!.

Basically, you’re looking at mid 17th century!.

If you're too lazy to do the research then you may be too lazy to finish an entire book!.!.!. :S Hopefully not, though!. It's hard to pinpoint the exact time that carriages were used instead of chariots, but around the 15th - 16th century they were in use!. The most predominant period of use for them was the 17th - 18th centuries though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first car I know of is Henry Ford's Model A, which hit the streets in 1903!. With its powerful eight-horsepower engine, the Model A could reach a breakneck speed of 45 miles per hour! Fully loaded, one of these bad boys could be yours for only $900!!!

So, to answer your query, before 1903 people had no choice but to employ horses, horse-drawn vehicles, trains, or their legs to get them from place to place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That's a very broad time period!. They've been using carriages for many many years!. From the middle ages and even earlier, if it was a wealthy family, all the way up until the early 1900s before cars were affordable for everyone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The pre-Civil war era (1840's ish) would have been a time when "society" in Charleston was truly at its peak!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
