Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I love that story!. Shines a spotlight on us all , doesn't it!?
The last book/story that made me go "Wow" was
The Handmaiden's Tale!. So did 1984!.

The Handmaiden's Tale:
The American Library Association lists it in "10 Most Challenged Books of 1999" and as number 37 on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–2000"due to many complaints from parents of pupils regarding the novel's anti-religious content and sexual references!.

1984:
An English novel about life under a futuristic totalitarian regime in the year 1984!. It tells the story of Winston Smith, a functionary at the Ministry of Truth, whose work consists of editing historical accounts to fit the government's policies!. The book has major significance for its vision of an all-knowing government which uses pervasive and constant surveillance of the populace, insidious and blatant propaganda, and brutal control over its citizens!. The book had a substantial impact both in literature and on the perception of public surveillance, inspiring such terms as 'Big Brother' and 'Orwellian'!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The last book I read that had a profound effect on my outlook was "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo!. The story was about a young man who came back from war-time military service w/ no arms, no legs, no face, & no way to communicate except by using his head to tap out Morse code on his pillow!. Dalton Trumbo (one of the "Hollywood Ten"), who was accused & investigated by the federal government for having Communist ties, was a screen-play writer during the post-WWII "Red Scare"!. The most recent movie that touched on the subject was "The Majestic", w/ Jim Carrey playing the role of Peter Appleton -- a screen-play writer who (according to the movie) developed amnesia from an accident after being named by one of those being investigated subsequent to the original ten!. Both Mr!. Trumbo's book, & the movie made me go, "Wow"! ~:)> Www@QuestionHome@Com

I was amazed by 1984!. When I got to those last few pages, I was just sitting there talking at the book!. My dad was in the other room going "I told you, I told you you'd act like that at the end"!. When I read the last paragraph, I threw the book on the table and walked away!. I was angry, but I loved the point the story made!.

also, Carson McCullers' The Member of the Wedding made me laugh, and almost made me cry!.

The play The Summer House by Jane Bowles as well as her Camp Cataract had me talking at the book, too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, The Lottery floored me!. also: The Razor's Edge by Somerset Maugham because of the time it was written and because it was loosely based on some true events, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, because it was so evocative and descriptive!. Both gorgeous books!. Oh, yeah, and the Catcher in the Rye!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
