A gentleman meant a certain social standing and that you were wealthy enough to not have to work for a living - typically has inherited property or family money!. Pip did become wealthy so in that aspect yes is became a gentleman, but at the same time society looked down upon those who weren't "old money" aka money from family or property!. Money made in trade was considered "new money" and new money was often made by successful businessmen (or in Pip's case gifted to him by a successful crook) but being in business made you of a lower social class - at least according to the standards of the 19th century!. So based on this Pip might have been accepted in some social circles for his money, but not necessarily considered a gentleman as much as others!. Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com
