It's very simple, really although, as usual, Poe uses obscure verbiage!. If you go out and punish someone for wronging you, you must do it with impunity!. If you get punished in return, the other guy is still one up on you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't remember coming across that quote in the story!.!.!.
It actually doesn't make any sense, if you unravel it!. Who's taking the retribution!? Anyway, it seems to mean that if someone is trying to right a wrong and they get beat up first, the wrong will remain unrighted!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
