Both were ancient Greek tragedians who wrote plays!. Aeschylus is sometimes considered the father of the classic tragedy!. Of the plays he wrote, I have read 4 or 5 on the curse on the house of Atreus!. Very harrowing stories!.

Sophocles wrote The Oedipus Trilogy, which is in many ways a paragon of classic tragedy!. Aristotle wrote a treatise on the elements of classic tragedies, and I think Sophocles embodied this treatise perfectly!.

also, if I recall, just before the battle of Salamis (around the time of the battle of marathon), someone was sent to the underworld (this may have been from a play by Aristophonies, which would have been a comedy!.!.!.I just can't remember) to fetch Aeschylus to help decide on the best course of action to win the war!. Eventually Euripides (another ancient Greek Poet) was brought back instead of Aeschylus!. There was some test of wit with Hades presiding over the competition to decide the winner!. They were two of the three Greek tragic playwrights whose works have survived!. (The third one was Euripides, who has more surviving plays than the other two put together!.) Aeschylus wrote the only surviving trilogy, the Oresteia, and is credited with making dialogue possible on the stage by introducing a second actor!. Even so, all his dialogues tend to be either one page-long speech followed by another or else an exchange of single lines!. His choruses have about half the lines in any of his plays!. Sophocles is best known as the author of Oedipus Rex and Antigone, but several other plays of his also survive!. He introduced the third actor into tragedy, shortened the choral passages, and wrote more natural diaglogue!. The comedy that Jones G!. is referring to is The Frogs, by Aristophanes, written not at the time of Salamis (which was fought the day Euripides was born, in 479 BC) but in 405 BC, shortly after the deaths of both Euripides and Sophocles!. The god Dionysus, feeling that tragedy has died with Euripides, goes down to Hades to bring him back but is persuaded to bring back Aeschylus instead!. The fact that Sophocles declines to take part inthe competititon that leads to the selection may be one of the jokes, since he seems to have been regarded as the greatest of the three even then!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
