Question: Horrible sight-reader over here!! HELP!!?
UGH! I always do well at playing the music I'm given in class, but here's what happens at competition:
I do pretty good at my scales, my prepared piece, and that good stuff!. But I always FAAAIIILL sight-reading!. I have been unable to get into any honors bands!. My teachers always give me tips, and they tell me how to do well!. But whenever I'm in that dead silent room, my eighth notes become quarters, my quarters eighths, and all sorts of messups! I play the notes correctly but not the rhythms! I'll even practice the rhythm ONLY for the thirty seconds, but somehow I mess up rhythm horribly and play notes perfectly!. I need any advice you have on sightreading, whether you're a singer or band or strings whatever!. (If it helps, I play trumpet)Www@QuestionHome@Com

You could clap and count the rhythm beforehand, so that you can remember the count of each note when you play it!. And, if no one will notice, you could tap your foot like a metronome while you play - it doesn't need to make a sound, just feeling the movement should be enough to keep the beat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just pratice!. I used to do the same thing!. Now I can do it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
