i know what you mean, i am really fascinated too!.
i found the story of Corrie ten Boom really inspirational (THE WATCHMAKERS DAUGHTER)
also the boy in the striped pyjamas, although i read that a few years ago so it may be a bit young!.
Once by Morris Gleitzman is good!.
Hitler's Daughter by Jackie French is really good- while it is a bit young, it is a really interesting perspective

Surprisingly enough, Catch-22!. I will warn you, it IS controversial for certain sexist representations!. But although it's a satire, it is extraordinarily well-written and easy reading despite it's complex style!. As a historical record, it is wildly inaccurate and yet metaphorically dead-on!.
