Question: Is 'important' a word you want to see describe a novel !?
Just finished reading "American Psycho" and frankly I just want my money and those hours of my life back!.

I feel the same way about "catcher in the rye" and having just noticed that both these books were described as "important" novels on the back cover, is 'important' a sign that a book is best avoided !?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it all depends!. I've enjoyed a lot of "important" books, although I do agree with you that Catch in the Rye made me yearn human euthanasia, I think it's on a book by book basis!.
The problem comes from the fact that to be a important, a book doesn't necessarily have to be fun!. Plenty of them are, but they can still be monumentally good as far as imagery, description, ideas, characterization, or amount of influence on other authors, but not actually be a good read!.
