Is it on a classics list!? I wasn't aware that the book was considered a classic-- the movie is and in fact, the story was done as a screenplay first, then finally published as a paperback (no hardcover until after the movie was a success!.) Kevin Costner was a friend of the author, Michael Blake, and he encouraged Blake to turn it into a novel!. This took a few years and by then, Costner was a well-known actor and optioned the book for the film!.

I suppose it could be argued that it is the portrayal of a man who reinvents himself, finds a new identity in another culture!. Part may be the depiction of the Native American culture; I believe it was Cheyenne in the book, changed to Lakota in the movie!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
