Question: Books that you didn't think you would like, but have become firm favourites!?

I had to read 'Under Milk Wood' at school!. before we ever got to it, people told me how boring, pointless and cryptic it was!. I loved it, and it is now one of my favourite books!.
what ones were you almost put off of reading by ill informed critics!?

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult!. A friend recommended her to me and I read the cover and thought it sounded really grim, and too chick lit for me so I left it!. My other friend borrowed it when we went on holiday and loved it, and I finally gave in as I had run out of books!. It was a hard read emotionally but I couldn't put it down!. I always balk at her books when I read the plot (suicide pacts, high school massacres and child abuse) But she writes about them brilliantly, raising important issues and challenging perspectives!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually I wasn't uninformed on this one!. It was about the time the fourth harry potter book had come out and for some reason I didn't want to read it becuase everyone else liked it!. I absolutely refused to read it and each time the book was offered I turned it down!. Then my mom got the book from my cousin and read it and said it was amazing!. Finally they both ganged up on me and said that if I tried reading it they would both leave me alone afterwards!. I read the first chapter and was hooked!.
I am a big bookworm and quite often, even in the books I later love, I start the book, pause about halfway through, and then finish the book a few days later!. It never happened for Harry Potter, Twilight or Eragon!. That's one of the things that helps me know whether I really thought the book was good or not and I've read Harry Potter repeatedly ever since!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

for ages everyone i knew was going on about the davinci code, angels & demons!. so when people started going on about a book called
"A child called it" i was like and!.

but i read it anyway and ended up staying up the whole night to finish it, it was that good!. i have never cried so much at a book before!. its not for the faint of heart but it's a true story and one of those books that you just have to read in your life, absolutely heart breaking!. : ) Www@QuestionHome@Com

A book by Malcolm Marshall Smith called One of Us!.

I found it in a bargain bin in Portugal for a few pence and only bought it because it was a thick book and I thought it would keep me going for a while!.
The blurb sounded terrible about a futuristic CCTV opressed society ( I read this book about ten years ago before CCTV and the Labour government really started to watch and monitor our every move in he rediculous notion of FREEDOM), and there were talking fridges that dictate your diet and other random completely random inanimate objects with microchips that take over our lives-!!
