Not counting books written in Japanese, it's probably Jean Genet's Diary of a thief!. His brilliant use of language is, as I said, brilliant, yet can cause headaches!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This doubt is stimulating!.

The optimal undoubtedly intricate book is -Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant!.I find this arbitrarily in the book and indeed it is related to philosophy!.But the language befits!.

Paradise Lost by John Milton is indeed superlative by means of poetry!.

The Republic by Plato!.Regarding of philosophy!.

James Joyce is idiosyncratic,all of his works is extraneous!.

There are so many innumerable abstruse,esoteric books that I could wholly not list them,for philosophy books,virtually taxing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of the books already mentioned, I think Clock Work Orange was the worst!. Otherwise, Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury;
Borge's 'Labyrinth';
Virgil's 'The Aeneid';
Milton's 'Paradise Lost';
Spencer's 'The faerie queen';
Any of the heavily post-modern or surrealist authors, including "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler" by Italo Calvino
Seutonius' 'Life of the Caesars' (I wouldn't waste my time)
Some of Henry James' novels are difficult, but most are alright!.
Middlemarch by George Elliot (too long and convoluted)
Jane Austin is also a bore!.
I quite enjoy the Russians, but I know many people don't!. These include Solzhenitsyn, Dostoevsky (some of his works, like 'underground' and 'double' etc are very difficult to follow, but others like Crime and Punishment are great), Tolstoy; Turgenev; etcWww@QuestionHome@Com

Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray
It wasn't the language that made it difficult, it was that I hated the main characters!. I got so upset at the characters that it took a full week to read the entire book!. I wanted to finish it because I thought it would eventually get better, but it didn't!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

A Clockwork Orange!.

That was absolute madness!. I wanted to read it, but I couldn't get past all of the bizarre language and dialogue!. I like the film, but I've never been able to get more than a few chapters in!.

On the Road by Kerouac also presented similar issues of my not being able to understand everything!. I got nearly the whole through, but finally gave up with like, a chapter left!. I couldn't hack it anymore!.

every time i start reading gravity's rainbow i fall asleep within 10 pages (i'm up to 3 tries now separated out by several years)!.!.!.so i guess that makes it pretty hard to finish, eh!?

obviously the bar for inscrutability is higher for theory, but personally i had a lot of difficulty with everyone's favorite old pals deleuze and guattari!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The original version of Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte!. Nearly every single word in each sentence I couldn't understand! I read up to chapter 4, in my grandma's library, hoping if I read it it would become easier throughout the book, but it just became more complicated!Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Counte of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas!.

I read it when I was in the 8th grade!. The story is compelling it was Dumas' language and style that made it so very difficult to read, especailly for a 13 year old, but I loved every minute of it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Finnegan's Wake is hard!. !. !.unless you speak 6 different languages!. I don't!. Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is an absolute bore!. I say it is the best known book that nobody ever read!. Karl Marx & Mao Zedung are pretty tough going even if you do like some of their ideas!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
