There are thousands of opportunities to earn from writing, but unfortunately there are millions of people out there who think they are writers!. The most common way to earn money is by freelancing- articles, filler etc!. It's a very competitive market, and although only the very best make a LOT of money from it, it's not impossible to make a decent living!. To break into the business most people go through years of rejection, and ninety percent of people who want to be a writer are put off by this!.

I'm slightly different- I'm useless at non-fiction and none of my short stories are suitable for the market, but I have sold novels- I get a small advance then royalties on books sold (between 12!.5 and 14% of the sale price, so the more the shops charge the more I earn)!. I still have a full-time job out-with my writing, but I hope that in the next couple of years I'll be able to write full-time!.

When people say they want to write, they think that they are going to be the next James Paterson or J!.K!. Rowling, and the truth is that these guys are the lucky ones- most writers don't earn huge sums of money!. That said, I write because I enjoy it, and the fact that I CAN get paid for it is a huge bonus!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I used to, but discovered that it's best to start as a (serious) hobby!. Your regular job shouldn't be anything too demanding, so you should have plenty of spare time - and energy - outside work!.

Whether you're going to take up fiction or non-fiction, try and write something every day!.
