Question: What is "Purple Prose"!?
People use that term in this section, and I don't know what it means! =OWww@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Extremely flowery and overly descriptive language!. For example:

"I gazed wonderingly into his captivating chocolate-brown orbs as his smooth, pale hands slid through my chestnut curls!. The milk-white candle on the dark mahogany table next to us sent its soft shimmering light dancing lightly across the ruby red walls and I sighed at the dazzling perfection of it all!."

I'm frankly a little disgusted with myself for managing to come up with that, and to be fair that is *extremely* purple!. But you get the idea!. Purple prose gives a lot of unnecessary description that not only sounds cheesy but also makes it seem as if whoever is telling the story has completely lost focus - in this example, it would initially seem as though the narrator is focusing on the man - but then she's also managing to pay enough attention to the table and the candle and the light and the walls to give them a description as well, which is rather stupid and unrealistic!.

Purple prose does have its place - trashy romance novels that people read and enjoy without expecting it to be good would probably be the primary example!. In a book that is attempting to be serious, however, such as those in the Twilight series or the Inheritance Cycle, purple prose is really not a good thing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"Purple prose" is a term referring to writing that is so overly descriptive and overly dramatic that it takes the reader's attention away from the story!. It breaks the flow of the story and is usually characterized by overused adjectives and adverbs!. The writer puts in so much ostentatious description that it makes the story seem unfocused!.

Excellent examples of Purple Prose writers are Stephenie Meyer and Christopher Paolini!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Basically what Elissa and Epiphany said!.
Having a lot of purple prose in a book is bad!. A talented author can describe things and create a mood without having to resort to it!. However, there seems to be a new phenomenon where books containing lots of purple prose (Twilight, Eragon, etc) become insanely popular!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
