Question: Help me name this book!!?

There's this book I read in high school, I think it was in European History but I can't remember the title or author!. The only think I remember i that there's this old man that's mute and I think paralyzed and so to communicate, someone gose through the alphabet and the dictionary and he blinks when they get to the word he wants to say!. The character you are thinking of is Monsieur Noirtier, father of Villefort - the procureur du roi, kind of like the District Attorney is my understanding!. Monsieur Noirtier can see and hear, and indicates to his granddaugther, Valentine, and his trusted servant, Barrois what he means by such methods as you described!. Check the chapters titled M!.
