Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Iliad by Homer, most definitely!. LOTS of war, blood, betrayal, despair, psychological conflict, tragedy!.!.!.One of the best stories ever in my humble opinion!. Get the Lattimore translation!

You could also try The Odyssey which is perhaps more accessible and more familiar though it is probably not as war-like and despair-centred as The Iliad!. There is a longing for home throughout it and a strong aspect of family and loved-ones being essential!. There's also a lot of hardship to be suffered!.

Either one is good though Iliad sounds more like what you're looking for!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, I don't think you should just lift the lyrics, but nothing wrong with being inspired by 'em!. You want to avoid the watered down compilations like Edith Hamilton's mythology!. There is no poetry there!. I'd go straight to the sources: Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Hesiod's Theogony, Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes and Orestia all come to mind!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes if you want war then you would definitely go with either the Iliad or the Odyssey!. Both are very good books and good examples of what you are looking for!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
