Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Gerald is a superficially attractive young man, an honest businessman (so we understand) succesful, handsome and charming!. However, he has a guilty secret, his affair with Eva the previous summer!.

At the end of the play, when he thinks that the girl Eva is not dead after all, he shows himself to be lacking in imagination, because he does not realise, as Sheila and Eric realise, that all the things the Inspector told them MIGHT have happened, due to their actions, and that he is to blame for what he did even if the girl is not dead!.

He is a rather complacent character, sure of himself and his place in the world, not really believing that he has done anything wrong, even though he has wronged both Eva and Sheila!. He is really a younger version of Sheila and Eric's father!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
