These two guys make friends at a monastery!. One of them is a scholar, the other is creative and emotional!.
The creative guy escapes from the monastery and does a bunch of crazy stuff!. He stays with a farmer for awhile and falls in love with his daughters!.
He gets kicked out, befriends and kills a thief, and finds a town dealing with some kind of plague!. I think he finds another girl and takes her to a cabin in the woods!. The girl gets sick or murdered, I forgot which!. I think he fights another guy!.
Somewhere in the story he decides to make the perfect Virgin Mary statue or something like that!. I remember he spends some time with a sculptor!. He gets involved with a rich lady, causes lots of trouble, and meets his old student friend!.
Back at the monastery, he works on his sculpture, hires an apprentice, gets sick, and dies!.
