O!. Henry - William Sydney Porter - worked at quite a few jobs in his life, including as a journalist and a bank teller!. Money went missing from the bank and, when he was put on trial for embezzlement, he fled to Honduras (and other places in Central America)!. He only returned when he heard his wife was dying and then stood trial and was convicted!. He began writing his short stories while in jail!.

There is much more, but he was a storyteller in that he wrote quite a number of short stories!.
