She was in a mental asylum right before!. It's my theory that the doctor who was caring for was a good vampire who wanted to save her from an unfair death, so he turned her, but left her alone in her cell before she changed, so she never really knew!. All that solitude helped her think through her future, and gave her a chance to explore her ability!. Not Volturi, because they would have kept her!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

She was in a mental institution because of her visions (which she had as a human too) and an older vampire at the asylum changed her to protect her from James who was hunting her - she remembers very little as a human - just that she woke up as a vampire :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I can't remember the exact location but it was in a asylum and she was changed by a worker who wanted to spare her!. I think you can find the place in Twilight!.
