I went through the same confusion in school :-) As a literary movement, romance (or romanticism) has these characteristics:

an element of fantasy and the occult (witches)
nature is very important (forest, the rose busy, etc!.)
psychology
the individual is important

That's all I can think of!. But you get the idea, yeah!? It was a reaction against realism, and science supposedly having an answer to everything!. Danielle Steele writes romance novels; Hawthorne wrote during the Romantic era (around the mid-1800s)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because the story is a romance!. Hester Prynne falls in love with Reverned Dimmsedale while waiting for her husbands arrival in the new town!. Hester and the Rev seize seeing one another in fear of what could happen, then news comes to the town hesters husband has died and her and the Reverend secretly see one another!.
