I went through the same confusion in school :-) As a literary movement, romance (or romanticism) has these characteristics:

an element of fantasy and the occult (witches)
nature is very important (forest, the rose busy, etc!.)
psychology
the individual is important

That's all I can think of!. But you get the idea, yeah!? It was a reaction against realism, and science supposedly having an answer to everything!. Danielle Steele writes romance novels; Hawthorne wrote during the Romantic era (around the mid-1800s)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because the story is a romance!. Hester Prynne falls in love with Reverned Dimmsedale while waiting for her husbands arrival in the new town!.
