Question: Why is my writing so dark and kind of depressing, when I generally have a sunny, happy personality!?
Generally I'm a nice girl, with a sunny personality who enjoys being goofy, playing with my nephew, laughing at Robot Chicken and being random!.

However, very little of my sunniness comes through in my writing!.

For instance, the story i've been working on for my creative writing class has been described by my classmates as dark, gruesome and sometimes frightening!.

There's this one scene where my main character is being tortured for a crime she did not commit that a classmate said gave him a nightmare!.

Is there something wrong with me!? Why are my stories so dark!? Like honestly, when I read my stuff, it doesn't seem that bad to me!.

For instance, when the main character is very young, she gets horribly disfigured while trying to help a friend!. I barely described the accident, rather I just had her pass out when it happened, than she woke up several days later in the process of healing!.

1stly, are you sure your friends aren't exaggerating!?

2ndly, sometimes writers express the other side of their personality through their writing so they don't have to express it in real life!. You probably have no interest in violence in real life whatsoever, which means that instead of repressing the violence that all animals need, you put it into writing!. It's healthy and more to the fact it's fantastic!

3rdly, you can't really write a story on happy things!. Every piece of writing usually has some sort of problem!.

4thly, be proud in your talent!. I wish that I could naturally write dark stories, it's a true gift! I'm stuck with writing trashy stories and maybe one or two okayish stories!.

5thly things that can affect you in this way could be things you've read, seen or watched when you were younger!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

"the main character is very young, she gets horribly disfigured"

I guess most people just have a very pessimistic view of the world and anything not bright and cheerful is deeply upsetting for them, I agree with you that it's not *that* bad, it is a book after all!

However, I believe that sadness should be balanced with happiness, or at least with some sort of upside!. Nobody wants to be thrown on to the path of depression by a book!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well - that's the thing about writing - it reflects what is in your unconscious!. And the unconscious, my friend, is a very powerful part of us!. It holds repressed material and all that fun stuff!. It's very interesting to learn about!. And when reading people's work of literature you can often tell what was stewing inside of them!. Writing serves as a channel from the unconscious world to the conscious!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well it's probably because those kind of stories have good plots!. When a story is dark and gruesome, it really keeps the reader interested!. also your stories may seem so frightening because maybe you have that really loyal personality, and it is showing through your writing!. Just a guess!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because you want to be deep, and in order to be deep, you often have to be depressing!.

Sunny stories aren't deep!. Stories with some depression sprinkled throughout are!.

Frankly, if I want a happy story, I'll watch a disney movie!. When I read a book, I want some depth!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The things that fascinate people are not necessarily the same as who they are!. You're writing a story, not a biography!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
