'homage to catalonia' is awesome in my opinion, but perhaps that's 'cos i live in spain and am interested in it's history!. spain suffered one of the bloodiest and most pointless civil wars of recent times, brother killing brother etc and it's still relatively fresh in the people's consciousness, i!.e!. it's still very much a taboo subject for some!.

orwell came to spain during this time and joined a militia group fighting general franco's fascist armies (the latter of which won the conflict, plunging spain into a dictatorship under franco, that they are only just recovering from now!)

this is his account of his time there and i find it incredible to read about the gunfight's in the streets and roofs of barcelona as the ordinary people tried to live their lives amidst the fear of skirmishes and snipers, death etc!. strong stuff! !.!.!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Homage_to_C!.!.!.

equally amazing is 'down and out in paris and london'!.!.!. the 'paris' part especially is among one of my favourite pieces of literature!. you can smell the dirt and poverty on every page, certainly an eye- opening read!!.!.!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Down_and_Ou!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I was in my local used book store and picked up a collection of his essays!. They were absolutely amazing!. He covered much of his time in India with the British troops, his boarding schools days, and Gandhi making each seem as important as the other!. He truly has the gift of putting incredible meaning in even the most seemingly insignificant subjects!. You must look at his nonfiction!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
