outline ,I use to do the same exact thing you did until I discovered how much outlining helps!. Outlining doesn't have to be boring and tedious and take all the fun at discovering new things about your characters , it just keeps you in a general direction so that way you won't get lost down a rabbit whole!. also knowing your characters really well helps out a lot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I used to have the same problem so I wrote out a basic plan of the story line!. I ended up changing it like a bazillion times because the characters kept leading me somewhere different, but having a rough skeleton to base things around helps a lot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I plan with a friend!. It helps keep me motivated and I always get a bunch of new ideas!. Normally I just start typing an introduction chapter after I'm done figuring out the overall plot and main characters!.

After that, I start talking to friends and figuring out what should happen next!. It also helps to write ideas down in a notebook--or even an outline of the chapter!. I do this when I've got work and there's nothing to do!. I suggest you bring that notebook everywhere (be sure it's small!.!.!.lol) because inspiration to write can strike anywhere, and you don't want to forget the ideas you come up with!

For some reason, we (my friend and I) end up planning the ending first!. It may be because planning the ending helps us understand the direction which the story goes!. What is everything leading up to!? Why would it happen!? Stuff like that!.

I know other people plan their stories using the typical story format!. Introduction, climbing action, climax, falling action, ending!. Stick in an even for every one of those then figure out the stuff that comes in between!. This is a more structured way of doing it, and though it could be a little bit boring and what you plan may not end up being in the final piece, it's still a good way to force you to follow through and go on with the story!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
