For a young adult/teen Meg Cabot's young adult books!. She is the best author!. also best selling!. A thousand splendid suns is also set in Afghanistan and covers the fears, the struggle against the violence and the hope and love of families and friends!. My suggestion is to start reading books by Haruki Murakami, who is renown for his very intriguing plot twists!.
