His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance!. Throughout his life, Santiago has been presented with contests to test his strength and endurance!. The marlin with which he struggles for three days represents his greatest challenge!. Paradoxically, although Santiago ultimately loses the fish, the marlin is also his greatest victory!.

When the captured marlin is later destroyed by sharks, Santiago feels destroyed as well!. Like Santiago, the marlin is implicitly compared to Christ!.

As an English Major in college, I found the greatest thing about interpreting works was that it was all subjective!. What it means to me is probably going to be different for you!. The way that i consistently got 4!.0's in class was by listening to the others discuss it and coming up with something different!. More than once, I received comments like "I disagree with what yo say but see how it is substantiated in the work!.

One thing to consider doing is looking up the author's bio!. A great deal of his/her's life blood goes into the great works such as these and we are developed by society more so than anything else!.
