Good question!. The star, star, star, thing means that the author is starting in a new place, or some time has past, and they don't want to start a new chapter, so they put that in!. I hope that I helped you out!!! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

The three asterisks signify that the section has come to an end!. Usually they just put a few blank lines between the two sections, but when the section ends at the very bottom of the page, blank lines obviously wouldn't be noticed since the rest of the page will be blank also, so they mark the end of the section with the asterisks instead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They're called ellipsis marks if the author has a character's dialogue trailing off (unable to finish sentence, used for dramatic tension!. e!.g!. John proposes to Mary who only likes him as a friend!. She's completely flabbergasted & says "John, I don't know what to say!.!.!. Then the author may describe how flustered she is, can't look @ John, etc!.)

also used to show change in setting or time or to switch to characters not in previous scene!. Can appear anywhere on page, but definitely needed at end of page to alert reader to new topic!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They mean an omission of some kind!. If the book is quoting a long passage from another work, the asterisks may mean that a portion has ben left out!. And at one time, in works of fiction, they came at the end of a love scene and meant that it was getting too steamy to describe!.

They may also simply mean that some time has passed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It really depends, as authors use it to their discretion!. Usually, it's because a significant passage of time has occurred or there is a switch between point of views!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

the author wants to start to talk about something new!.!.!.!.so instead of starting a new chapter!.!.!.they just put the three stars to let us know they will talk about a new topicWww@QuestionHome@Com

It means the author is starting something new!. Or something like that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Usually means that there is a jump in time or place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
