The star, star, star, thing means that the author is starting in a new place, or some time has past, and they don't want to start a new chapter, so they put that in!. Usually they just put a few blank lines between the two sections, but when the section ends at the very bottom of the page, blank lines obviously wouldn't be noticed since the rest of the page will be blank also, so they mark the end of the section with the asterisks instead!.Www@QuestionHome@Com They're called ellipsis marks if the author has a character's dialogue trailing off (unable to finish sentence, used for dramatic tension!. e!.g!.
