She is silent on the topic!. She does call her marriage "o'erhasty," and that is one suggestion that she might have been attracted to or having an affair with Claudius before Claudius dispatched Hamlet Sr!. Gertrude is opaque!. She is capable of being shamed by Hamlet about the marriage in Act III, but a person who acted virtuously--strictly within the letter of the law who did not have an affair--would feel some guilt about quickly remarrying in such circumstances!. Therefore, it is impossible to determine her feelings!. She might not have sorted them through for herself either!. Shakespeare gives her no soliloquies, as he does Claudius, for instance; she recovers her poise from Hamlet's beating up on her in her own bedroom very quickly!. That may either be because she does not feel guilt in any depth or because like Claudius she is able to master her emotions in public!. One simply cannot say!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Ghost says, in guarded but unmistakable terms, that, while he was still alive, Gertrude committed adultery with Claudius!. When the King died, she put on a big show and then got it on with Claudius as soon as possible!.
Hamlet makes a big distinction between Gertrude's love and that of her husband!. His love was protective and directed towards her - 'as if he would not wish the winds of heaven to visit her face too roughly' - but her love was directed to satisfying herself - 'as if increase of appetite grew from what it fed on'!. She lamented for Hamlet Sr's death for awhile then continued with her life (meaning: getting married to Claudius) That is the reason why Hamlet is so angry at Gertrude!. He can't fathom the reason why Gertrude would marry her husband's brother!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
