Question: What is theme of this poem !?
use lines from the poem to support your interpretation!.

when you were small
you used to climb
in our bed
when lightning ripped the sky!.
we'd hold you tight
between us
while our father said:
"that storm is miles away"
a second before the room
was lit
with fearsome light!.

now when lightning strikes
you stay in your own
narrow bed
trying to think of other
safe things
and we in our wide bed
sigh separate sigh
because we no longer know how
to comfort you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is the first I've read this poem!. Please tell me this is a typo:

"while our father said:"

Shouldn't it be "while your father said:"!? If not, we may have an incest problem here!. =(

I interpret this poem as being primarily about alienation of the child from his/her parents, and secondarily about alienation between husband and wife!. The child used to seek comfort in the parents' bed when the child was frightened, and the parents used to comfort the child!. Now, the child is still frightened ("trying to think of other safe things") but stays in his/her own bed!. The parents not only do not know how to comfort the child any more, but are alienated from each other ("wide bed", "sigh separate sigh")!.

So, the theme is alienation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
