Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It depends on what you're talking about, to be honest!. From the time of submission to acquisition, long time!. It takes about 6 months to go from slush to rejection letter; to go from submission to acquisition can take a year!. If you're super fabulous, less so!. From the time a manuscript is acquired to the time it is transmitted to copy editing, between 6 to 12 months!. The editing process involves a whole lot of back and forth; I have a book that was supposed to come out last year and the book is still being worked on!. !. !. !. The lead time for paperback novels is about 6 to 8 months; depends on what special effects are on the jacket, how long the ms is, etc!. The lead time for hardcover novels is 9 months to a year!. Lead time is the time it takes to get the book done: copy editing, designing, proofreading, working on jackets, selling books, finalizing orders and prices, printing, binding, jacketing, packaging, and shipping!. If you just want to print and bind your book, you can try vanity publishing or self-publishing!. And you can try lulu!.com!. It will cost you money and it's not necessary the way I'd suggest since there's not that much stock in those types of publishing avenues, but you never know!.
