On the same page you were looking at:

"Harry Potter is descended from the Peverell family, an ancient wizarding line, of which Tom Marvolo Riddle is also a descendant!. Harry is known to be descended from Ignotus Peverell because of the family heirloom of an Invisibility Cloak!. It is assumed that Riddle, a!.k!.a!. Voldemort, is descended from Cadmus Peverell due to his own family heirloom of the Resurrection Stone!."

Harry's father was a pure-blood wizard, he is only a half-blood because of his mother!. The invisibility cloak came through his father, and thus it can be assumed that his father is the descendant of Ignotus Peverell, and therefore it is through his father that he is related very distantly to Merope Gaunt (and through her, Voldemort!)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Gaunts were the last descendants of the Slytherin line and were a Pureblood line, direct from Salazar Slytherin!.

Harry must be related to them through his father, who was also a Pureblood!.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with tracing the lineage!. First, JKR has said that Riddle and Harry have no ancestors in common, and yet, the Peverell name is in the bloodlines of most prominent families!. That implies that the Potters, who were an old and rich family should be in that group, or have links to someone that does have relations there!.

On the other hand, I cannot find anything that JKR wrote or said, that said the Ring that hid the Resurrection Stone was passed on in direct lineage!.

The Gaunts ended up with it, but nowhere did JKR say it was passed down in direct line!.

If the Gaunts are an offshoot line, a cadet branch of the Peverell family, they could have gotten the ring when the main branch died out, and they were the last of the line!.

That would explain how they could be related to Harry, and not have any ancestors in common, as JKR says!.
(The most likely answer is author error!.!.!.!. She simply didn't take the time to make lineage charts for all the people in her story, and discrepancies crept in!.)

"An ancient, in-bred, pure-blood wizarding family living in slovenly conditions in a shack in Little Hangleton!. Family members include the father Marvolo, and a son Morfin and a daughter named Merope!. The Gaunts were the last remaining descendants of Hogwarts co-founder Salazar Slytherin!. Once a wealthy family; by the 1940s, they were best known for their instability and violent behavior!."

"Merope Gaunt was the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt and mother of Tom Riddle!. Eighteen-year-old Merope's hair is lank and dull and she has a "plain, pale, rather heavy face!." Her eyes also gaze in opposite directions!. Merope's father is extremely abusive to her and derisively calls her a "Squib" (and other dreadful things)!. It is no wonder that Harry observes that she looks "defeated!." In addition to ragged clothing, Merope wears a heavy gold locket that her father claims belonged to Salazar Slytherin"

The Gaunts and Harry Potter are both descended from the Peverels -- the brothers who created the 3 deathly hallows!. Harry is descended from the brother who created the invisibility cloak and Merope and her son are descended from the brother who created the stone that was in the ring Marvolo wore!. So they do have a common ancestor in the parents of the 3 brothers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

they might be because harry's ancestor is Peverell and the ring that Merope's father wore had the Peverell crest on it!. Merope's father said he was related to the Pevrells for that so it goes:
Pevrell (also Harry's ancestor)>Merope's father>Merope>Voldemort

so its definately possible!. :) :]Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would check J!.K!. Rowlings's site because I'm almost positive that she's stated on numberous occasions that Harry and Voldermort share no common anscestors!. Either way there is no evidence to support this in the books!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A rough family tree from information in the books and interviews with JKR is on wikipedia:

Harry is distantly related to Voldemort (and therefore also to Merope Gaunt) because they're both descendants of the Peverell brothers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

because Harry's dad was a pureblood, and was probably related to Merope!. I'm not that into the whole HP scene, so don't kill me if i got any of these deets wrong:(Www@QuestionHome@Com

Harry's father was a pure blood, so i'm guessing Gaunts related to the father!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

merope was voldemorts mother!.!. so I doubt that they are distant cousins!.!.!. but anything is possible lol!.
