I agree with Rob, but it's called From the Corner of His Eye, also by Dean Koontz!. That was one of the most amazing stories Dean Koontz has written, in my opinion!.

Some others of Dean Koontz's books you may enjoy include:
-Odd Thomas (and the rest of the series: Forever Odd, Brother Odd, Odd Hours)
-Fear Nothing and Seize the Night (the two Christopher Snow stories)
-Watchers (if you like dogs, you'll like this one)
-The Darkest Evening of the Year (also one with a dog)
-The Face (this was another amazing one)
-Lightning
-Life Expectancy
-The Taking (if you enjoy apocalyptic/post apocalyptic)

I've also been told False Memory and Hideaway are really good, but haven't gotten to them yet!.

I'm not sure I know of any other author quite like Dean Koontz, though you can search Google for "Dean Koontz readalikes" and will get lists of different authors!.

You may enjoy Catherine Coulter's FBI mystery series, which starts with The Cove!. It doesn't have the same heart-warming aspect, but the stories are good!.
