I think that's pitiful enough (humiliation from knowing his true past--and also knowing that he was the reason that Thebes was cursed in the first place when earlier on he was its savior from the sphinx) and evokes terror (Incest and using the brooch to gouge at his eyes)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com It was not exactly to evoke pity and terror!. The most important Aristotle's idea about tragedy is expressed in his theory of "catharsis"!. You ought to research that!. I will give an example of catharsis as Aristotle understood it: I feel terrible grief because my heart was callously broken and I weep my bitterness; one day I assist to a play where one of the actors or actresses delivers a monologue expressing all his grief and impotency at having lost the love of his life!. Such speech, as expected, would not have an ordinary structure but the embellishment of poetry!. A common feeling to all the human race taken up to the level of art; symbolism and representation!. Acording to the catharsis theory I would feel excited indeed at hearing that monologue and recognize that feelings through poetical language but in that precise moment I will not feel the "naked" and personal grief that I felt before but some other new sensation of relieve and aesthetic emotion which, even if reminded me of my own situation, made me feel excited!.
