Boiling mad is a figure of speech, not a metaphor!. A metaphor is something that uses an unlike description to give a dramatic picture - for example, a blanket of snow!. Blankets aren't made of snow, but snow can lie over things like a blanket, so the blanket of snow is a metaphor!. In your example, you could say he was a cauldron of rage!. That gives the impression you want - of hot, uncontrollable, anger, and stays within the definition of a metaphor!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is also a figure of speech, and hyperbole as well!.

The metaphor is somewhat buried: instead of saying "he was a boiling pot of anger" the metaphor is used more lightly, but the phrase still involves a description of an emotional state as if it were a different kind of physical reaction!. That is a metaphor!. Not every metaphor takes the extremely simple form of x = y!. And not every metaphor takes the form of a noun!. "He was boiling" is as much a metaphor as is "He was a boiling pot" even though the first metaphor is in the verb and the second in the noun!.

To say that it is a figure of speech is simply to say that it is a familiar phrase -- a figure of speech can also be a metaphor!. In fact the definition of metaphor calls it a figure of speech!. From Merriam-Websters: "a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them"

Sometimes if the phrase is so familiar as to be a cliche, it is called a dead metaphor!. Meaning the phrase is so familiar that no one stops to recognize that it uses a metaphor!. But a dead metaphor is still a metaphor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
