Check the Occupational Outlook Handbook!. If I may quote from it: "Median annual earnings for salaried writers and authors were $48,640 in May 2006!. The middle 50 percent earned between $34,850 and $67,820!. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $25,430, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $97,700!. Median annual earnings were $50,650 in advertising and related services and $40,880 in newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

Don't do it for the money!. You'll probably need a rejular day job to pay the rent!. Less than ten percent of authors actually live off their book sales without any other income (like a spouse with a job)!.

Let's say it takes three years to write your book, edit and polish it, and send it to an agent!. It takes maybe another six months to sell it (advance aginst royalties) for about 10K (some genres pay more, some pay less)!. You don't get that all in one check!. If you're lucky you can get half on the sale and half on publication (which can take up to two years)!. So, it took about 5 years to make 10K (and after paying taxes and agent fees, you might still have 9K)!. That's not even enough to pay rent for those five years!.

If you book sells well enough off the shelves to earn out (meaning you make more than 10K in royalties at say 15% of the book's sale price) then you start getting royalty checks once or twice a year and often it won't even buy a week's groceries (at east at my house)!. If it doesn't, well, you get nothing and chances are your book will end up dropped from the shelves and in six months!. You can try for foreign sales and book club reprints for a little more money, but don't count on that to pay for a new car or anything!.

Makes you wonder why people want to write, doesn't it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on how well-known they are!. If you write one best selling book, you'll get paid more for the second one, because they'll expect another best selling book!.
It depends on too many factors for a definite answer per person!. My suggestion would be to do some research!.
But I have to say, if you want to be an author just so you can make a lot of money, please spare us and don't!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The amount of pay depends on the type of book, the publisher you sent it to, the overall popularity of the writer's style and many other factors!. It's probably best to google this subgect!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nothing if you don't sell!.
If you sell!.!.!.it could be anything from 1000 to 100000(The 100,000 thousand, is VERY VERY rare for a book!. You have to be at King's level for that)

There is no fixed income for authors!. Get a day jobWww@QuestionHome@Com

there is no salary !. and they are self-employed !. you get paid by the book !. and seeing that most authors are rich id say its pretty good moneyWww@QuestionHome@Com
