Question: What's a good book published before 1900!?
I need to read a book which was published before 1900!. Does anyone have any suggestions of a good book which is not long, easy to read and an interesting story!. I've already read all the Jane Austin books and I find authors like Charles Dickens too hard to follow!. I've read lots of good children's books written before 1900 but this can't be children's fiction!. Has anyone got any suggestions!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know exactly what you need: some H!. G!. Wells!. His stories are well-known and brilliant, like 'The War of the Worlds', 'The Time Machine', and 'The Invisible Man'!.

They are not long at all, but are considered real classics (as they should be)!. They are also written in a great, straight-forward, exciting style - quite the opposite of Dickens and the likes with their flowery, rather excessive language - and are much more exciting and suspenseful than you would expect!.

If you think H!. G!. Wells won't tickle your fancy (even though he will), then Oscar Wilde is pretty good too!. I don't think his stuff is short though, except for his play 'The Importance of Being Ernest', but it is incredibly funny!. You need a good bit of knowledge of nineteenth-century society to read it though, and the language can be pretty extreme too!.

Louisa May Alcott had other books besides Little Women, some of them wonderful thrillers for adults!. They're all very easy to read!. The adult books may still be copyrighted and not available on the web, so check with your library or a bookstore!.

Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe http://manybooks!.net/titles/stowehar2032!.!.!.

Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray http://www!.bartleby!.com/305/1!.htmlWww@QuestionHome@Com

I see a lot of suggestions, mostly great ones!. I just wanted to add one lie to it, that you find most of these books free in the internet, so don't buy them!. There are quite a few good resources for this, including Project Gutenberg!. My personal favorite is (and I strongly recommend):

You could try something from the Bronte's!.!.!.Emily's Wuthering Heights(not one I'd recommend but fits the criteria) or Charlotte's Jane Eyre!. Lewis Carroll's Hunting of the Snark (liked this one better than Alice)!. Thomas Hardy's Far From the Maddening Crowd or The Mayor of Casterbridge or Tess of the D'urbervilles!. Rudyard Kipling (of all the 19th century writers my favorite!!!) Captains Courageous, Kim or The Light That Failed!.
