We aren't really given a full exposition for the beginning!. It can be assumed that the year is around 1950, as he says he knew Esme almost six years ago, and it was 1944 when he met her!. Other than that, the only setting we can assume is America!.

You do get a setting for his first flashback, which would be 1944, Devon, England!. This is also when the characters are revealed - the narrator (later mentioned as Sargent X), Esme, and Charles being the three main ones, and then a couple others coming in later in the story!. The second flashback takes place in 1945 ("several weeks after V-E Day"), in Gaufurt, Bavaria and introduces another direct character, Clay!.

I'd assume this is for an assignment - you may want to ask the teacher what exactly he or she wants, just because of the nature of the story!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

The first chapter holds most of the exposition (characters, setting, date, etc!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
