Montag's wife would stay at home looking at the "walls", which were apparently a large video pseudo-life, somewhat like watching soap operas all day or some imaginary life on the internet!.
The firemen sent out the "hound", a kind of robot dog that would sniff out books!. This is a clear metaphor for the RFID/surveillance that is so common today!.
The firetruck, firemen, is just a reflection of the goon-squad cops that we have today -- they bust into your home, smash everything you hold dear -- dressed in black like the SS!.
