When books stores make space for new books, they are instructed to remove some older ones from the shelves!.

Hardcover and trade paperback (large ones) are sent back to the publishers!. Regular paperbacks are then stripped of its cover!. The covers are sent back to the publishers as destroyed and the author does not get paid for them!.

Sometimes these books are stolen from the bins and sold illegally, thus the warning!.

Many publishers now remedy this by demanding that the first ten pages or so are also returned with the cover!.

Because unsold books are heavy, bulky, and expensive to ship back to the publisher, booksellers are required only to tear off the front covers of some (cheap) unsold books and ship those back to the publisher to get credit!. The theory is that the booksellers can't sell the books without the covers!. However, sometimes the "destroyed" books do end up getting sold, albeit at vastly discounted prices!. So, publishers put the warning in the books to warn consumers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
