He had been away over The Hill and across The Water on business of his own since they were all small hobbit-boys and hobbit-girls!.
"All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff!. He had a tall pointed grey hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots!.
"!.!.!.Gandalf looked at him from under long bushy eyebrows that stuck out further than the brim of his shady hat!."

That is the description from the first chapter of "The Hobbit!." His appearance changes after he faces and defeats the Balrog in "The Lord of the RIngs" stories!. He becomes Gandalf the White!.

Gandalf is known as the wandering wizard!. I do not remember ever seeing reference to where he came from or where he might have lived!. He never had a tower like Saruman's Orthanc!. I'm almost positive that he chose to walk among the people's of Middle Earth, calling no land home, because he was needed equally everywhere!. Of course, at the end of the series, he goes into the west with the elves and Frodo on the last ship to leave the Grey Havens!. Sam dreamed about the homeland of the elves "the grey rain curtain turned all to silver glass, and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores, and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise!." That would be where Gandalf finally settled after the age of the rings was over!.
