Question: The Scarlet Letter, Custom House Question!?

I have to answer questions on Nathaniel Hawthorne's Custom House introduction!. I have answered all but this one: Detail why Hawthorne believes his ancestors would disapprove of him!. All I've found is that they find it foolish and immoral!? Is that right!? Can you add anything!? Thank you!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Our teacher let us skip that part: she just said all we needed to know was that he put it in there to show the time period he grew up and wrote in!.

If I would say, yes!. He grew up in Puritan society, and A) writing books about sinful stuff was imorral, and B) they believed in the value of hard work!.
