A!.S!. Byatt is a wonderful author!. She wrote "Possession," a story about 19th century literary figures who were in love, but there's also a modern-day love story!. She has written other novels as well!. This is an especially good author if you like 19th century writers, because then you will understand the allusions that are important in some of her books!. "Possession" covers topics like friendship, family, and especially love to some extent, although there's also a lot about artistic creation and so forth!. It would be a challenging book for high schoolers, but they could look up the allusions & share with the class so it could be fun too!.

Another writer that might be good, especially if you like Gothic themes, is Daphne du Maurier!. I've been meaning to read her books but haven't yet, but know that "Rebecca" is a novel set in Cornwall about a new wife coming to an estate that still holds the presence of the husband's former wife!. It's supposed to be very good!.

Both of these books are kind of Gothic and generally recognized as quality works!. I can personally vouch for "Possession" being an engaging and powerful story, and I'm looking forward to the day when I get around to reading "Rebecca," since I've heard so much about it!.

Hope this helps! Www@QuestionHome@Com

Two possibilities for your consideration spring to mind:

1!. Nick Hornby!. I know he's written other books, but your requirements made me think of the only text of his I've read: A Long Way Down, a story of four would-be-suicides who meet when they run into each other atop the same building from which they intend to leap!.

2!. William Golding, author of _Lord of the Flies_, which you may have read!. It's a common high school text!. It certainly deals with how humans interact with one another!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
