Question: How I do become an effective writer!?

This sounds too obvious to be true, but the answer is write, focus, write, focus, write!. For nearly 20 years I wrote 1000 words a day, in the form of a letter to my parents, describing scenes, and making incidents into little stories!. I concentrated on noticing as much as I could when out, and remembering the telling details, and the things which connected elements of each day, so there might be a thematic take on the day!. Because it was my parents, I didn't focus much on my most inner and private emotions, so the "voice" I used was of a generally happy wanderer in NYC, but the practice of focusing on details, making quick notes in a small notebook I always carried, and then arranging the elements (discarding some, exaggerating others) into one or more stories!. I tried to let them see what I saw, and get some sense of what I felt about it!.
The second major thing you must do is rewrite and edit!. You can save felicitous phrases for use elsewhere is you take them out where they don't really add anything, so don't mourn anything, just edit and rewrite!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You'll probably get a lot of good answers in a lot of different directions, but for my money, one of the best ways to become an effective writer is to read and _use_ The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr!. It is a very small book, and you can usually find secondhand copies at used bookstores or websites that sell used books!. Or better yet, just read it online for free at

If you like it, you will probably find it worth your while to buy a copy!. (Brand new, it still costs less than $4!.00!.)

The book starts with a look at some basic rules of grammar!. However, instead of reading like an English rulebook, it talks about how clear grammar improves your writing!. The next section deals with specific ways to write better, including things like using an active voice, omitting needless words, and organizing your thoughts!. Lastly, there's some brief mention of troublesome punctuation, as well as words which are commonly misused or misspelled!.

If you're looking to write fiction, the best advice is probably to read great writers!. But regardless of what you're writing, I've found that skimming quickly through this book before starting always helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
